WCC celebrated V-day with a difference

On Valentine’s Day (14 Feb), WCC joined One Billion Rising - a global movement to end violence against women. V-Day is to remind people that when lovers display love through flowers and dinners, there are many women who still suffer sexual violence from people who are supposed to care for them.

There were about 100 women, men and children who performed the One Billion Rising flash mob at Gurney Walk. We would like to thank everyone for their support on that day, including those who held placards and strangers who joined us in the second performance!

Act in the best interest of children
Numerous issues have been raised following Izwan Abdullah’s alleged abduction of his 6 year old son. Yet in the midst of all the discussions and arguments on the Constitution, conversion and custody, it is important that we do not lose sight of the most important issue at hand – that the safety and wellbeing of two innocent children hang precariously in the balance.

JAG wins UN Award
The United Nations has awarded the Joint Action Group for Gender Equality (JAG), a coalition of nine Malaysian non-governmental organisations promoting gender equality, with the United Nations Award 2013 for ‘Millennium Development Goal’ Three: Promote Gender Equality and Empower Women.

Violence against women clauses must be improved, withdraw bill and consult public This morning, the government withdrew two problematic clauses in the Penal Code (Amendment) Bill, on vandalism and insulting the national flag. This is not enough – the Bill should be withdrawn in its entirety.
