WCC’s 25th Anniversay Dinner was a Success…!

On 2 October at the Gurney Hotel, WCC celebrated its silver anniversary as well as raised funds for our future 3-storey building. It was a night of good food, great entertainment and successful fund raising of RM400,000.

The event started off with a Red Carpet Runway where guests posed to take photos like Hollywood celebrities. There was also an ongoing silent auction with items ranging from antiques to luxury holidays.

The highlight of the night was a hilarious performance by Ms. Jo Kukathas from the Instant Café Theatre Company entitled “Sex, Money, Scandal: A Malaysian Pandemic”. Her character Ms. Ribena Berry was a satirical monologue on the political situation in Malaysia which left the guests laughing in stitches.

The other performances that were equally entertaining. A song drama “Call WCC” had our members and volunteers dressed in costumes and sang in different languages, urging the harassed and abused to call WCC for help.

The grand finale of the night was an empowering dance called “Sing”. WCC members, staff and volunteers carried placards with powerful messages and sang to the song. The night ended with an open floor dance

Walk to Stop Sexual Crimes: A Major Success!

Watch the video of the walk here

19 March 2011- over 800 people from all walks of life banded together for a common cause: to Walk Against Sexual Crimes.
Walkers marched eagerly in raincoats and umbrellas for 1 km, chanting slogans “Stop Sexual Crimes, Keep our children safe; Kanak Kanak, Ada hak” and banging on pots, plates and blowing whistles to make music. This created an amazing carnival like atmosphere at the Queensbay Mall Seafront where the walk was held.

YB Lydia Ong Kok Fooi, Chairperson of Penang State Committee Women, Family and Community Development, YB Chong Eng Chairperson of Kempen Rakyat together with 22 NGO coalition members of Kempen Rakyat flagged off this meaningful walk. They were accompanied by 20 Kompang players from Persatuan Seni Silat Cekak Malaysia and Indian drummers from Siva Tappu.

Many of the walkers carried beautiful banners and placards with powerful messages. Amongst the biggest groups of participants were the enthusiastic students of INTI college who came with painted faces and striking banners.

NGO booths were also set up on the field to display and promote their activities and services or to highlight issues. Some booths such as Asia Community Services (ACS) and Childline entertained the crowd with interactive games, batik drawing and sand art. There was also a Children’s Corner, where children and parents created their own placards before the walk.

After the walk, participants were entertained to a 2 hours exciting Kempen Rakyat Concert exciting Kempen Rakyat concert with children’s dances, songs, drama to hip hop. It began to drizzle just after the concert began, which later turned into a heavy rain. However, it did not dampened the people’s mood as they rushed to the NGO’s booth for shelter and watched the concert from there.

The concert commenced with 13 year old MJ Sarewin, a Michael Jackson impersonator, followed by Gymrama, a children gymnastic display. National Idola Kecil 2009 winner Nor Harris Alif bin Nor Rashidi belted out Justin Bieber and Robbie William songs. The Phor Tay School Private High School Dance Club performed their international acclaimed dance drama Scarecrow and Beauty of Mother Nature. Other dances were Tarian Zapin, Joget to Hip hop and Rap. This entertaining show ended at 9.00pm with the giving away of the prize for the placard and outfit competitions and with the finale song “We are the World “by the YWCA Kindergarten

Overall the “Walk Against Sexual Crimes” was a big success. On behalf of the organisers, we would like to thank everyone involved.
